being on the edge of

Being on the edge of is a dynamic idea. It's not the same as just being simply on the edge which is static and is going nowhere.  The question on the edge of what?  points beyond itself. If you are on the edge of you stand between worlds, between possibilities.

The experience of being on the edge of is the soil in which the human quest of religion grows. Religion is the organised form of humankind's reaching out to something beyond. My own 'faith' is Christian. The history of the Christian faith, when at its most authentic, is told from and on the edge of ..

Jesus was on the edge, and that's often where he is really found today. Sometimes it might not seem it but being on the edge of can be a place of redemption, of reconciliation, of encounter. Being on the edge of is being outside of the 'temples' of human power and exclusiveness. This place outside of the system is a 'liminal' space where transformation and true conversion are much more likely. So often the Gospel of Jesus us preached by those of us within the system, and so often the point is missed. There are many in our society who want to pray to  God but cannot buy into the whole dogmatic or liturgical or cultural package of the Church. They are 'outside the system', on the edge.
